Sorry Col. Van T. Barfoot.  We regret to inform you that after little consideration, you must take down your flag pole.  We simply can't tolerate the American Flag being flown properly in our condominium complex.  We understand that you raise it every morning at dawn and lower it every day at dusk, and this is what your military training has taught you, but to be quite frank, it is unsightly and doesn't conform to our aesthetic standards.  Yes, we know that you are 90 years old and that you spent your formidable years giving everything you had to this country.  We know that you served in 3 different wars.  We know that you are one of the country's last living Congressional Medal of Honor recipients.  We know that in Italy in 1944 you single handedly took out 2 German machine gun nests, captured 17 German prisoners, faced down a German tank with a bazooka, destroyed the tank and its occupants, disabled a fieldpiece with a demolition charge and then carried two seriously wounded men 1700 yards to a secure location...all in the same day.  We know all of this. We've read your official citation: Sgt. Barfoot's extraordinary heroism, demonstration of magnificent valor, and aggressive determination in the face of pointblank fire are a perpetual inspiration to his fellow soldiers.  We also understand that you went on to fight in Korea and Vietnam where you earned a Purple Heart.  You can be certain that we're all very impressed, but it isn't 1944 anymore and we aren't the Germans, North Koreans or Viet Cong.  We are the Condo Board, and we are ordering you to remove your flag pole.  We've determined, like everyone else in this country, that style is more important than substance, and your flag pole simply doesn't fit our style.

Now we don't blame you for this misunderstanding.  We know that you are old and that at one time or another, flying the Stars and Stripes properly was considered to be something admirable and important, and that sometime in the not so distant past, America was proud of veterans like you.  But, that was then, Mr. Barfoot, this is now.

Yes.  This is now, and we elect Presidents that protest wars not fight in them.

This is now, and our President can, under the guise of thoughtful deliberation, ignore his Generals when they plead for more troops while good soldiers suffer the consequences on the battlefield..

This is now, and after months of delay and based only on the advice of political operatives, our President can announce that he will send less troops than requested.

This is now, and in the same speech, our President can declare that he will withdraw all of our troops on a specific date in the not so distant future.

This is now, and our enemy can't believe how weak we are.

This is now, and our government cares more about political correctness than the safety of our soldiers.

This is now, and our military promotes suspected terrorists to the rank of Major.

This is now, and after one of the most horrific terrorist attacks in our nation's history, the shooting at Fort Hood, we are asked not to call it terrorism.

This is now, and our own Navy Seals, after capturing one of the most dangerous terrorists in Iraq, are charged with assault instead of being honored as heroes.

This is now, and the only evidence against our Navy Seals is the captured terrorist's allegation that he was punched during the capture.

This is now, and the terrorist handbook clearly recommends making false claims of assault against your American captors.

This is now, and our government takes the word of a human butcher over our own special forces.

This is now, and these Navy Seals have retained lawyers and are facing court martial.

This is now, and thank god we've finally stopped waterboarding terrorists to get valuable information that saves American lives.

This is now, and the terrorists responsible for 9-11 are going to be tried in civilian court and given all of the Constitutional rights that would have been granted to the innocent Americans they incinerated.

This is now, and these 9-11 terrorists, who have already admitted their guilt and asked for the death penalty, will now be given a platform to preach their anti-American hatred to the world.

This is now, and with this decision, our President has turned our battlefields into crime scenes and perhaps changed the way battles must be fought to preserve evidence for trials.

This is now, and our President can visit Communist China and criticize American values and our way of life.

This is now, and we worship the Environment, Government, Celebrities and Political Correctness, not God.

This is now, and we use hoaxes like Global Warming, Health Care Reform and Cap and Trade to disguise our assault on Capitalism.

This is now, and we don't protect our borders or our border patrol agents because illegal immigrants can vote.

This is now, and we re-elect the contemptible, the corrupt and the traitorous because they give us free stuff.

This is now, and if you try and work hard, be self-reliant and provide for your family, you are just a sucker.

This is now, and we are addicted to reality television shows that mock the values you fought so hard to protect.

This is now, and if good people don't prevent it, our children will live in a socialist country, totally dependent on the Government.

This is now, and while there are still many men and women in the military who sacrifice everything for their countrymen, they are too few countrymen back home with the will to prevent all of this from happening.

So, Mr. Barfoot.  Please take down your flag pole.  After all, the American Flag is more a symbol of oppression and imperialism than freedom and liberty.  Just read any public school text book and you'll see.  Why do you think Barack Obama refused to wear a flag pin on his lapel during the campaign anyway?  Take down your flag pole, Mr. Barfoot.  It's time to join us and surrender to the Socialists that you once fought so hard against.  After all, Mr. Barfoot, that was then, this is now.
